Fairoaks is the only airport in Surrey and probably in the South East that can be operated 24/7 for medical emergencies and organ air transport services with the personnel able to attend to refuel, provide fire cover and the control tower facility at a moment’s notice, so that these vital flights can take place.  There were 152 such medical flights/movements recorded at Fairoaks in 2016.

surgery 1280x640Fairoaks’ close proximity to London makes it easy and accessible to transfer these life saving organs to nearby and London hospitals, and this has been going on for many years without fail.  It is essential that this vital service is kept going.

Just to pick one such example, on the 4th of January 2017, the company that operates an ‘out of hours’ emergency medical flight service left at around midnight to fly to Dublin with a surgical team to procure a human heart for transplant.  The flight and team were successful – the aircraft returning the next morning with a fully functioning heart which was sent on its way to a person in desperate need of the life-saving operation.
